About the project

Welcome to my project! Our project.

I am a young adult from Western Australia trying to navigate my way through society.

I'd always aspired to be kind to our Earth and create a positive change to the society we live in, but honestly? I found myself hoping someone with a lot of influence or power would change everything for us. As I got older I began to understand that realistically change isn't quick, it doesn't happen overnight.

As I became more and more aware of this fact, I would become upset and angry at the smallest things. Anything that showed me the dire situation we are in. I'm usually quite an optimistic person but with situations shining a poor light on society becoming increasingly frequent in my own life, positivity is hard.

Writing has always been my personal outlet, documenting life's joyful memories, but also sorting out the tangle of feelings and emotions in my head before they become too overwhelming. One afternoon, after a situation at school and weeks of doom-scrolling, I sat down to write something for a project. Turns out there were a lot of emotions to convey...

Society.

We live in a world,

best described as selfish.

Judged by the colour of our skin.

Wars that we lose or we win.

We live in a world,

where it's power over people.

Divided countries run by greed,

not a second thought for those who need.

We live in a world,

where a fifteen year old can destroy his life.

Where a twelve year old is mentally unwell,

where speaking truth is a "tell".

We live in a world,

where by the time our generation has grown up,

our world could be done for,

because we wouldn't help each other.

We live in a world,

full of hypocrites.

"Be yourself" they say

then discriminated that same day.

I kept this writing stashed in the backs of books for a while. Like any other pieces of my writing, it felt too fragile to share, too personal. I began to come across other writers and poets when I joined social media and after reading some of their pieces that lit a spark of hope in me, I realised that maybe if people could read something that resonated with them, something I'd written, they might begin to fully see and feel our situation. It is our society after all. So I let some close family and friends read it and seeing their genuine emotional reactions fuelled me with the motivation to do something. What something was, I wasn't quite sure. At 14 there wasn't a lot I believed I could make an impact on. Around the same time, I came across a book called 'Simple acts to change the world' (Amy Neumann - 2018). It gave me the final inspiration I needed, and I scribbled a reminder before I could forget: website??

I started to speak up about world-wide issues more, researching them in depth and bringing them up in conversations. I began to plan and research website design, social media marketing and simple changes, leading me to where I am now: author of my own website and social media brand, participant of multiple youth programs and halfway through my Certificate III in Events Management.

To Change Our World went live as a Wixsite in mid-June of 2021, and it kept growing from there! Social action projects in my school, gathering teams of like-minded people, donation drives, beach cleans, joining my local youth advisory group and saying yes to participating in relevant change-making programs and opportunities. I have learnt so much, and I am still learning.

My mission for this website is to spark change, inspiration, action, hope and empathy.

I want to show the world how easy it is to really start making a difference if we choose to care, and how to begin. Here on TCOW, I research, link and write about a range of issues in a way that's easy to understand, ensuring I include a variety of ways you can help, so we can get started straight away. I want to ensure that hope, inspiration and credible resources are easy to find and understand so we can gather as many people as possible. And every now and then I will share more poetry, that I hope inspires, moves you to action and even encourages you to share your own way of speaking out. Art has such a profound way of impacting how we view our world, don't you think?

At this projects heart is the belief that with all of you, change is possible.

We'll stop the silence, raise our voice,

a new plan has unfurled.

What a feat, for us to be

the ones To Change Our World...

Thank you for the kindness you show our world and it's people. I can't wait to see what we accomplish, together.
